A Mile of Beer

Last weekend we went to Bermondsey, why? You may ask! Because rumour has it there are loads of bars and Taprooms and a thing called The Bermondsey Beer Mile, so we just had to check it out.

This is a new revelation to us, so we are clearly a bit late to the game, but that said we are here now!

The Beer Mile is basically a lot of bars situated under the railway arches running from Maltby Street Market right down to South Bermondsey Station. Starting at Maltby Street Market a tiny little alleyway filled and we mean jammed packed with bars and stalls selling food, from Cheese Toasties to Steak sandwiches, the choice is amazing. However it was a burger and hot dog stall – That’s Banging – caught our eye this time and at £9 a go they weren’t as extreme in price as we have come to expect.

We approached and instantly liked the stallholders who welcomed us with a smile and without prompting they offered the dog a free sausage – apparently a lot of the stalls offer ‘Dog’s eat for Free!’ Which is so cool! It has to be said the vegan Hotdog was HUGE!! and delicious! It’s been so long since I have had a hotdog because normally theres no vegan options and I have never found someone who does it well – Now I have! With food lining our bellies we set forth on our mission, with friends (R&D) leading us on, like a pair of experienced guides.

We started our day in

The Barrel Project

An impressive bar lined with hundreds (no exaggeration) of wooden beer barrels and a bar with around 20+ beers to choose from. We managed to get in before the rush as we sat at the table there must have been 50 people suddenly queuing up to be served.

Ash had a Sticky Toffee Stout 9 out of 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Bob had a Peach and Nectarine Sour- 8 out of 10

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Then it was on to the next bar, passing the cider bar and instead to

Anspatch and Hobday

This was a very strange bar – the seating was not attached to anything so every time someone moved the whole seat would push you forward. Other than that the toilets were disgusting! Not a good sign for the start of the day.

Ash had The IPA

Rating: 5 out of 10.

Bob had the Sea Salt and Lime Gose

Rating: 7 out of 10.

Next from a short walk around the corner to Enid Street and

Moor Beer

Cool Skeletons outside for the decorations but the venue was a bit dark and dingy.

Ash had The Stout

Rating: 6 out of 10.

Bob had the Plum Sour and some of the Rhubarb Sour

Rating: 6.5 out of 10.

Cloud Water

Very large venue perfect for hiding from the sudden rain and thunderstorm with lots of material drapy things from the ceiling.

Ash had The Sticky Toffee Stout

Rating: 6 out of 10.

Bob Had the Passionfruit Sour

Rating: 7 out of 10.

and Some of the Raspberry Sour too.

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Bianca Road Brew

Really trendy decor – that raw chipboard that you see everywhere nowadays.

Ash had The Chocolate Peanut butter Biscuit stout

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Bob had the Guava Passion Fruit Sour

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Craft Beer Junction

Well if nothing else I would have been happy to buy the entire fridge full of sours – I mean I was so spoilt for choice it was hard to pick. Strange…..

Ash had Let it Enfold

Rating: 3 out of 10.

Bob had The Passionfruit Blood Orange

Rating: 9 out of 10.

and some of the Return of the Mac (aron) – Pistachio, Vanilla, Marshmallow Sour

Rating: 8 out of 10.

Mash Paddle Brewery

This was a bar where you could make your own brew – so half is blocked off. The other half is yellow and blue with a couple of games that you could play running along the sides.

Ash had The DDH IPA

Rating: 4 out of 10.

Bob had the Mango and Apricot Sour

Rating: 9 out of 10.

The Kernel

We sat outside in this bar – mostly because the rain had stopped and it was packed with people in fancy dress.

Ash had the Export India Porter (we think?)

Rating: 5.5 out of 10.

Bob had the Cherry Sour

Rating: 7 out of 10.

Three Hills Brewery

This was a really odd layout – you had to duck under a staircase to get to the bar (which i would have thought would be a health and safety issues)

Ash had the Coffee Oatmeal Stout

Rating: 5 out of 10.

Bob had the Pineapple, Peach Apricot Sour

Rating: 5 out of 10.

Battersea Brewery

Really friendly staff with Large Brewing barrels at the side – plus the bathrooms were amazing! Clean with plants!

Ash had the Winner Winner Chinook DIPA

Rating: 7 out of 10.

Bob had the Apricaught Sour

Rating: 7 out of 10.

Four Brewing

A really large venue (but by the time we got there it was empty) we did get to watch the boxing though (so that was a plus from Bob)

Ash had the Hazy IPA

Rating: 3 out of 10.

Bob had the Lime Salt IPA

Rating: 4 out of 10.

Then we left to get home and Ash was drunk and doesn’t remember much!
