As a summary of 2017 we thought we would include all the weird, wonderful and extensive list of all the shows we have loved this year.
We will try and not spoil anything but just to be on the safe side
So without further ado..
OK we might run on and on about TV, but we watch a lot of it and binge watch a number of shows.
We liked the latest season of Orange is the new Black. This show is getting a lot more gritty and gripping the more it goes on. We are still hooked!
We loved Stranger Things and we just finished the 2nd Season, it’s so immersive. The second season is just as strong and the first and we look forward to exploring more of the new characters in the next season.
Of course we had the return of The Gilmore Girls at the very start of the year and it was lovely to see the return of the fast talking, coffee swigging Lorelei Gilmore, it may have been a little flat, but that is typical of trying bring back a much loved favourite and did the end open the door for another season?
Oh Game of Thrones, well did you expect that to happen? We love Arya! We still wish some of the secondary characters would get more screentime/lines and more involvement in the plot but other than that.
Star Trek Discovery is a bit of a let down and so flawed, (This coming from a lifelong Trekker – not Trekkie ) We don’t expect this to live long and prosper! I never got into Star Trek and this hasn’t changed my mind. Incredibly predictable and I find myself losing interest halfway through especially if the ‘Mocha Fockka chockka’ People are in it.
The Orville seems to do it all so much better a little cringey here and there, but the satire and scope of the show are quite clever.
The Good Place We were surprised at the success of a truly quirky little comedy that we stumbled upon. Though it is a bit stupid it’s still entertaining and the storyline hasn’t got stuck.
There was Riverdale of course, great 1st season, I love the timelessness of it, the way everything is so old school, with just a hint of modern, with a phone and laptop every so often. The second season is just as interesting and a second mystery is a brewing.
The Handmaid’s Tale was a great improvement on the film of a few years ago and even dare we say it, on the book! Wow, the casting company needs praise for finding so many odd looking people and Alexis Bleidel really can act and re-act, who knew! I found myself getting so outraged by this show and surprisingly so stressed out, which though it sounds like a bad thing, it really isn’t!
Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil and The Defenders, all ran over lapping and doing their own thing, sometimes well, sometimes not so, namely Danny Rand is crap at fighting! Luke Cage got too political at first and The Defenders were all over the place, that was not a well rounded group. I love the fact that Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) crosses over and helps tie the group together and also kicks some ass too! The one thing I noticed in all of these shows was the fact the secondary characters were just as courageous and strong in their own way so the focus wasn’t always on the Hero’s.
The Punisher has just started but seems good so far. I really liked his character in the last season of Daredevil and look forward to Karen Page’s input.
The Gifted is going well, if only we got more mutants, there seem to be thousands of them, yet everything relies on Disco Hands (Eclipse) and Thunderbird who seems to have every power under the sun. Give us more random odd ball muteys! But the series has been one we look forward to every week.
Legion did it well though, weird and strangely timed in places, but when you are watching it flows, it’s just going back for each episode that is the problem.
The let down of the year has to be Twin Peaks, the 2nd episode was truly the worst TV of the year, we gave up after that, so episode 3 could have been mind blowing we will never know. Honestly I had never seen the first series but I ended up watching this show much like this gif underneath but with less enthusiasm (but that actually looks entertaining)
Jane the Virgin continues to play along happily. We are watching this separately, Bob is currently on season 2 and enjoying every moment. But Ash is still picking through season 1 and it’s OK, but not so excited by it, hence Bob rushing ahead.
Lucifer Ash: This is much the same as Jane, it’s alriiiiight, but he drives me crazy! And because of that I’m not that bothered with it. Bob: I like all the leading ladies in this show but I agree with Ash, Lucifer is annoying, Though I think that has calmed down a bit since season 1.
Santa Clarita Diet is random and funny for a while, but didn’t hold my attention long enough to make it to the end of the season.
Big Little Liars Was good, a bit slow in places and really, really doesn’t need a second season. That being said some of that acting was quite amazing really and some of the characters were so annoying!!!
The 2nd season of The Man in the High Castle, was better than the 1st season, it had more understanding of what was going on, the alternate timeline stuff and more tension, plus it seemed to move more fluidly.
The Magicians Season 2 was just as good as the 1st, I still get irritated by Quinton, I still get irritated by Penny and it is nothing like the book! We read it earlier this year and the TV show is way better, well done to the writers! Season 2 was full of new characters and a whole new land, which was really good to see. May I just add that Julia makes the show!
Sweet Vicious Is it being picked up for another season? This is the main question, it was soo good! It broached a really difficult topic in a refreshing dark comedy spin without it sacrificing the importance of the moral. It just needs more time to make more statements and yet for some reason they didn’t pick it up, what is wrong with the TV Execs? Seriously!
The Bold Type This too didn’t look like it was going to get picked up, but finally it did and we are so glad! It’s so good, it was the highlight of our week to sit down and watch the girl latest dilemma. A strong female cast and again looking at some very important current issues in a refreshing way and so many nice clothes! We literally comment on every outfit in that show – And just a good thing, they wear the same clothes over and over, and talk about money, which most shows don’t.
Glow Strange show, quirky and a bit slow to get going, but we held on and it got there in the end. It just needs more of the fighting/wrestling.
The 100 Still going strong and the end of the season has us wondering what is going to happen next. There were some new additions to the cast this season, I just wished they had been explored more.
13 Reasons Why This was great, the book was great, the show is different but just as good. It really gripped you from the first episode and kept you sucked in throughout! Screw the naysayers, yes it was at times depressing but what did you expect? For us it was really worth the watch and we look forward to the second season.
The Expanse was a surprise this was more of my sort of show, I love space and everything to do with it. I Really like Chrisjen’s character and the way she dealt with the problems at hand, oh and Miller too. I much preferred the second season when you finally got introduced to Mars. Gunny (Bobbie)’s storyline had me interested at the get go, as I’m not too keen on Jim so season 1 was kinda annoying.
Taboo sometimes slow other times interesting overall this show was pretty good and Tom Hardy got his dog! Why was he naked on the boat though?
Vikings is one of the new shows we have started so we have a lot to catch up on. We want to see more of the shield maidens and Floki though, but will someone kill his brother please.
Satisfaction I am so glad that I discovered this show. I watched the pilot alone and thought that it was too good to watch alone. Sexy and interesting all at the same time. But we are not liking Adriana.
Chasing Life we really liked season 1 but season 2 seems stretched out and stupid. We want more of Brenna’s storyline! One of the first Bisexual storylines that seems realistic. We wished that someone would have got rid of ‘Dominic’ We hate him!
Newton’s Law was something I stumbled upon after watching Black Sails. The first episode was a bit on the stupid side but after that it got pretty good. It’s ok I have a bit of difficulty with some of the accents.
Teen Wolf I have been watching this from the very beginning and have enjoyed it throughout. The last season was a bit slow in places and some people didn’t even bother to show up for the end of the show itself. I only watched the last two seasons so I was a bit confused (plus all the guys looked alike to me) I spent a lot of time losing plot lines.
Black Sails was a dramatic and engaging prelude to the upcoming Treasure Island, We loved the first season and the 2nd kept on surprising, there are some really annoying characters which really drove us crazy and some we really rooted for. We finished all four seasons pretty quickly as it was a good show.
Westworld The remake of the film is clever and really involved, with some clever twists and some characters you end up feeling so sorry for.
Private Eyes is not bad, a bit predictable and yes you tend to guess the ‘Who done it’ aspect at the beginning, but it’s still fun, this is one of those shows where we have a difference of opinion, Bob likes Angie, but can’t stand Shade and Ash is the other way around.
Transparent Ok the show is weird and quite good, but a lot of the time we end up annoyed at the plot or the characters inability to say what they mean, or explain themselves. Also we have a friend who Jeffery Tambor clearly copied for his influence for the show and so it’s weird to watch, but it sheds a whole new light on our unnamed friend!
iZombie is odd, we still want Liv’s Recipe Book (minus the brains!) and it’s a little silly at times. It follows the same pattern each season, 1st & 2nd episodes are good, then it gets dull and the last 2 episodes are good, fun and shocking.
Channel Zero is weird (we keep saying that, but this is), Season 2 was creepy and yet clever. We are curious for season 3, we just wish they would cut out the long slow pan shots in every scene.
Dynasty was a let down, we tried, we really did, 3 episodes but it was too hurried and too flimsy, it was trying too hard. I remember the original as a kid and that was always entertaining and I hoped for the same, but was very disappointed.
Halt & Catch Fire is a show that seems to keep coming back and we really like it, it’s kind of like Legion, in the problem is you have to start watching it, to get into it again and that is the difficult bit. I still end up siding with Cameron in almost situation but Ash seems to be on the other side.
The Shannara Chronicles is a bit predictable, but we were surprised with season 2 Will didn’t get his shirt off in every episode, he was shirtless in only 1 episode – Shocking!! It lacks the darkness it tries to portray, everything is really jolly and Will will smile and it will be alright (I feel the need to write a few more Will’s in here, because I haven’t written enough – Will Will will will will!!) I wish there was more inclusion of the other characters literally anyone other than Will.
Modern Family is a clever show, it borders on cheesy, but never goes too far, it is a silly show, short and random in places, but I still watch it, every season.
Big Bang Theory is still watchable, but it has lost a lot of the appeal, I think it is time it ended, yet I’m still watching and still laughing occasionally, just not as much or as hard as I once was.
Saturday Night Live is entertaining, sometimes the hosts are annoying, sometimes they are unknown to us. It does have its ups and downs but the cast are always on point and Kate is pretty!
Project Runway The new season is doing the Unreal scenario, they are trying to be more entertaining by keeping in the annoying talentless designers, rather than let the designs speak for themselves and judge them on that, sure in the end the best designer will get to the final, but that doesn’t guarantee the best will win!
Runaways is a bit slow, seemingly HULU like that long, slow style and are trying to mix The Gifted with Jessica Jones but we are interested, we have only watched 1 episode but will keep watching.
Travelers we tried the first episode recently, it looks intriguing so far.
Salvation is good, we started to watch then put it on pause because we were watching too much, but we are eager to go back, that is a mark of a good show.
Younger is OK, it can get a bit stupid at times, but we seem to watch it just to gawk and scream ‘What the hell is she wearing?’ Because it is is Trendy Hipster ‘I’m a wanker’ fashion throughout the cast.
Chesapeake Shores is on the back burner until we have space, but unlike Salvation it hasn’t got us bitting at the bit to get back to it. It’s a bit of a Hallmark show but you know pretty people and all that jazz.
Stitchers is getting better season by season, it still has the soppy moments, but it still has surprises here and there and yay Anna Akana!
Flash is a bit silly and predictable, it needs a vigorous shake, I gave up at the end of the 1st season because it’s too soppy. I am still going and it’s getting better and better as it goes on. I am still enjoying it.
Supergirl is bordering on silly, there are good moments, but they get underplayed in favour of the ‘Wholesome American’ isms. Cara’s relationship with Jimmy and Maggie and Alex’s relationship were started then ended when they got somewhere, because it is not PC enough. I gave up halfway through the last season, I couldn’t stand the squeaky noises coming from this storylines. I am still going but it is just getting dull and predictable.
Once Upon A Time is silly, it’s too predictable and is milking it, when it should have just ended last season. Also I just want Lana Parrilla to get a spin off season instead.
Arrow This is stupid, I know we said no spoilers, but really how can no one realise that The Arrow has changed colour? And Not enough Felicity, Whhhhhhyyyy?! She is the best part! I think the whole storyline as got a bit too convoluted but I’ll still watch it.
Supernatural OK we are way apart on this Ash gave up at season 6 and has started watching again this year. Bob is on season 718. I’m still not convinced this is that amazing, it’s not bad, it’s just not something I can see me watching for another 200 season or whatever it’s up to now! I still like this show and think it has got better in the last couple of seasons, the cast are so used to the timing and their characters now they seem so natural and I want Ash to see that. I have watched from the very beginning and will probably watch till the last episode.
MacGyver is silly but there are lots of people in each episode. I like Riley and wish there was more of her.
Blindspot Ash I gave up this too, if a show isn’t gripping me I don’t return and I forgot about this halfway through the last season and never missed it. I still like this, she is pretty and her brother is pretty. I really like her tattoos but it’s just a bit too coincidental when they solve the tattoos. I like the new storyline with the brother but there are still flaws.
Orphan Black was clever, involved, twisted and confusing, But wow Tatiana Maslany, did an amazing job, we just wanted more clones.
Saving Hope was light hearted and ok, but the end of the last season got a bit too soppy really, trying to tie up everyone’s storylines became a bit of a joke.
Conviction was good, shame it didn’t get picked up for a 2nd season. It was interesting new take on law shows.
Librarians is a show about librarians. It is more of the type of show that can be on but you don’t have to pay attention. This season is the last though so I haven’t seen that yet.
We also watch a ton of YouTube below are our choices of channels we subscribe to. There are a couple of crossovers between us, but mostly we have our own preferences…
Although Bob Ross died many years ago, his channel is still as popular as ever, the hippy, laid-back artist, made shows on PBS with simple hows to painting amazing landscapes and remains an influence to many artist.
is Josiah Brooks is an Australian artist who does tutorials, Art challenges and a ton of art based stuff. I’ve been watching trying to learn to draw digitally.
Daily Jazza is the Vlog channel for Jazza. Daily vlogs about the artist, his life, family and general stuff, including personal/emotional life of the artist.
Shadiverisity Is a historical channel about swords, castles and anything nerdy, he also happens to be Jazza’s brother.
Tabletop Time is a livestream replayed on Youtube, of the Brooks (above) and friends playing a RPG called Cogent, that they invented.
Epic TV’s Climbing Daily is surprise a daly channel about Climbing. They report on walls, events, climbing achievements and review gear, they also have a shop selling gear, which they plug endlessly!
Matt Groom, the presenter of Climbing Daly also vlogs about his role as a climber and presenter, mostly his days off, but also about life lived in Chamonix, France.
The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC)‘s channel streams and replays all the World Cup/Championship climbing events around the world, for Bouldering, Lead and Speed climbing, plus has interviews with Pro Climbers.
I am a Gongoozler – that is someone that has an interest in, but doesn’t own a narrowboat and a few Narrowboat channels I watch are…
I used to watch Magnus and Wendy of Life in a Nutshell and we even interviewed them for the blog earlier in the year, but recently they sold the boat and moved back to Australia, they continue to vlog, but it has lost it’s appeal.
Cruising the Cut‘s David used to be a TV news reporter and his channel is often very much in that style, reports on everyday life on the UK’s canal system can be a little flat, but they are always informative.
The Minimal List are Jo and Michael an Anglo-American couple with their dog George. A new channel, only started this year and they have a light, fun vlog channel about their adventures on the shallow water.
Narrowboat Zero Gravity rarely post these days but when they do, their attempts to get a custom built narrowboat actually in the water are worth the wait, Saxon and Emma are a nerdy, sci-fi loving, funny and a little clumsy, but fun to watch, if only they would post more.
Karlie Kloss aka Klossy is a Supermodel, fitness addict, Coder, Cook and much more and this vlog channel shows all these parts of her life and more, including lots of great recipes and health products from a Vegan standpoint, (but not exclusively for the animal free)
Jessica Nigri is a Cosplayer who’s vlog is a mix of her madness and her Mail Monday, where she opens a ton of presents sent to her by fans. It’s a little weird and a lot mad!
And Bob’s choice
Self help and comedian – Anna Akana has fun, quirky and sometimes nerdy videos all with really good morals and interesting takes and views. I liked her so much that I told Ash to watch her, now we are both avid fans.
The Buzzfeed girls normally test, try and trial products, views and so much more. They are all very different women with different views, beauty, size and identities. It’s interesting to see all of that come to together with reviews.
Interesting, Quirky and Helpful! Stevie is one of those rare women that talk about literally anything with a honest and non judgmental take. At the moment she is talking about everything Sexual, including how to’s and sexuality. As a Lesbian she often tries to teach you things that you wouldn’t be taught about at all in sex ed. I cannot praise her enough, all this and she is beautiful inside and out!
Cammie is a Vlogger who currently is doing a lot of travelling with her girlfriend and taking a lot of footage making you feel like you are there with them. She’s so incredibly positive that you can’t help but smile when you’re watching. Occasionally she will post some interesting recipes for vegan food or all natural beauty products you can make yourself.
I have been a fan of Pink since I was a kid and I still am. This is her music channel so mostly is just music videos.
Somewhat similar to his sister, Will does a mix of self help, meditation, healing and comedic takes on problems and current topics.
Again I loved FOB for ages, so it’s only natural to keep up to date with the new music.
Good music, pretty music video’s with equally beautiful women. Hayley Kiyoko is the whole musical/video package.
As well as being an LGBTQ+ Youtube channel shorty award winner, Shannon’s channel is mostly just a Vlog of life and everything inbetween. It has recently shifted to follow her on tour.
Recently Ela has gone off the radar but there is still lots of videos to go back and watch. This is mostly a beauty and health channel with alternative ways of eating and healing.
Singer and songwriter his videos are normally just him to camera but he has such a pretty voice.
And of course SNL but that is mentioned above.
Now don’t say we aren’t detailed enough! Wow that is a lot of TV, it’s amazing we ever do anything else. But we do and stay tuned for our next post a big one for ClimbingMoss…
