Bad jokes aside, it’s Valentine’s day today and whether you celebrate it or not there is no way of escaping it. Shop windows have been swamped with cards, gifts and everything “Romantic”, since Boxing Day (The day after Christmas Day for all non-Brits of you) and all items have gone up in price 3 fold.

Our question is, why?

Surely if you love someone you should be showing them all year round, you don’t need to wait for a specific date to do so.

If you like that person go for it! Ask them out it doesn’t depend on the day. Or tell your spouse how you feel, not because it’s the 14th February.

This is a perfect excuse for companies to sell you the idea that an expensive gift is important and it seems many people expect you to spend a small fortune on them to show that you love them, whereas it should be about spending time with your significant other.

It can’t be just us that ask these questions and notice this because over the past 10 years there has been a steady decline in those who celebrate.

It seems that no one really knows why we celebrate it, the origin of the date isn’t even clear, it is either for;

Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realising the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

St Valentine

Another legend was an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “Valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.

Given this post you may have gathered we are not fans of this excuse to sell more crap, but we are not raining on any Lovers parade, in fact we want to see more love and acceptance in the world, but that should be because people want to when they feel love hit them, not just because a day on their calendar demands them to be.

So do you celebrate St. Valentine’s Day? Do you feel it’s a reasonable way to celebrate love? Or are you single and hate to day? Or married and hate the need to go out at lunch time and spend £30 on a bunch of flowers that would usually cost £5?
