The Christmas break is over and we have done our Top Lists but before we move on from last year we thought we would do one last review – which was a Vegan Christmas Hamper by Mighty Plants.
Before we proceed we want to wish you…
So over Christmas you eat a lot of food right? Well for Vegans it can be a bit problematic and eating the same Nut Roast over and over can be tiresome. Especially having an allergy to a lot of the British Winter Vegetables such as Courgettes, Gourds, Aubergine and Herbs like Rosemary and Turmeric – you limit your choices greatly.
So, we found something different, that sounded appetizing, gave us a selection to graze on.
Mighty Plants is a vegan online supermarket and at Christmas they had a Hamper of Holiday foods and on Black Friday they offered it at a discounted rate.
The shipping was delayed so that the food arrived a week before Christmas so it would be easy to store and would be ready to go without having to rush around a shop for ingredients.
The Hamper contents was – 1 Juicy Marbles Loin, 1 Arleys Turkey Joint, 1 Plantside Yorkshire Puddings, 1 Honestly Tasty Shamembert, Sourdough Crackers, 1 Not Clotted Cream, Nougat & 1 Fruitcake all for £55 + delivery.
So we waited for the delivery, as Christmas got closer and there was no sign, email or otherwise notifying us of when the order would be arriving – we reached out and got a very Blunt email in response – in fact it was very terse bordering on rude.
The food did eventually arrive with 2 days to spare (23rd) the delivery man brought a very (I mean extremely) damaged box, with all the contents battered and smooshed and one item missing entirely. We contacted Mighty Plants explaining this and was met with another rude email – stating it doesn’t matter that the boxes were damaged or that the items were missing only that it did arrive in time for Christmas, the condition was irrelevant.
So, we know we won’t be ordering from them again based on this level of customer service.
For Christmas day, we decided to cook the Turkey Joint alongside the standard vegetables, we didn’t use the crackers (as they contain Rosemary) which when ordered stated you had a choice of Cracked pepper, Salted, Rosemary or Spiced, which you could specify which one – we asked for Pepper or Salt but was given the only bad choice.
Anyway Christmas Day came, presents opened, arguments ensued but then after all of that we sat down to eat. The Turkey Joint which looked much like a small ball of rubber when put in the oven still looked the same but maybe even smaller and harder. We gave it the benefit of the doubt perhaps it would taste better, cutting it was a mission, the rubber like texture kept springing back into its shape without leaving so much as a mark on the surface. With a bit of persistence and a heavy duty knife we opened it, made a slice and then tasted….
It was horrible!!!! NASTY!!! Like eating trodden on rubber, in fact maybe like eating a climbing shoe after its been worn for a day in summer. I took one very small nibble spat it out and just stuck with the veg.
Next up came the Cheese – Shamembert which was aptly named “Shame” because this was the probably the vilest thing I have ever put in my mouth – think gritty, pungent and clumpy with the taste of PVA glue and a hint of fish.
The Yorkshire puddings were very cardboardy and dense with none of the usual Yorkshire puddingness.
The cake was in the grand scheme of things not bad, very very dry and solid, like if you threw it at someone you could knock them out. The taste was not too bad and it is actually edible.
The only thing that stands out in a good way is the Juicy Marble Loin – we have eaten Juicy Marbles Steak before the Ribs too and have really liked them! So we know Juicy Marbles as a brand make good food this was the first time trying the Loin – It did not disappoint! This brand is probably the closet in texture and taste to real meat.
The Nougat was nowhere to be seen which we don’t know if that was a happy accident as out of the 8 items – 1 was edible, 1 was good, 1 missing and the rest 5 were disgusting, horrible, nasty, vile abominations.
So all in all this was a waste of money, the death of taste buds, a Christmas dinner ruined and a bad experience with customer service. I would recommend buying Juicy Marbles especially if you find it on offer as it is on the pricey side but other than that avoid Mighty Plants.
Did any of you out there try the Christmas Hamper? Did you like it? and if so Whyyyyyyy? Leave a comment and lets chat!
