London Heatwave: Smart Ways to Stay Cool

Written by

It’s actually hoooottttt in London this week, which is both a blessing and a curse. Since we are not right next to the sea as we usually wish, here is how we are trying to beat the heat.

This week has been rare with the weather; London has been on average 30+ degrees, and being that it is usually freezing here, the buildings/transport/shops/anything really are simply not made for this weather.

Supermarkets, fridges, and Freezers have all failed, so food is scarce. Buses are either breaking down, heating on full blast, or the engines are overheating.
Railway lines have all but shut down due to stretching.
The houses are baking everything inside due to the way the homes are made.
People have forgotten what Deodorant is and instead smother themselves in Linx or Victoria Secret body spray.
Workmen and Building Sites shut down because it’s a type of weather – you know, like rain, or heat, or snow.

So with that said, what can you do to try to keep cool?

Firstly, don’t take your pets outside unless it’s before 9 am or after 10 pm or at least until it’s a sensible temperature out and you can do the 7-second test – Walk barefoot outside if your feet are burning, then it’s a no-go! No exceptions!!!

Stay Hydrated – Drink water, like a lot of water, juice, electrolyte drinks are especially good as they contain salt and sometimes Glucosamine, which helps replenish what you have sweated out.

Cold baths or showers help.

Sounds counterintuitive, but eating something hot/spicy raises your body temperature.
Or drink a hot cup of tea if you’re British, or Coffee if that’s your jam.

Buy a Fan or an Air conditioning unit or both.
You can always do the aluminum foil trick on the windows, but it’s worth noting that it can damage your window.
Don’t open your windows or curtains when it’s at the hottest part of the day, and wait until nighttime to circulate the air.

A Cooling Blanket can help or a Cooling Matt, especially for the dogs (if they will actually lie on it)

Don’t forget Sunscreen or lotion. We posted our favorites on TikTok the other day.

Utilize outdoor spaces, whether it’s your balcony, garden, forest, or meadow, but stay conscious of your body, don’t get burned, etc.
We dream of having a pool, the use of a lake or a large pond, but sadly, that is not the reality.

Also, be aware of temperatures when watering plants, try to do it later in the evening, as anything before will boil/bake your plants.

Overall, don’t worry too much next week its supposed to go back to being under 25 C.
