Join the Game to Claim the .earth Hexes Near You

30 days ago, a new website was launched where you ‘Claim’ the ground you’re standing on. Earth is cut into hexagons the size of a tennis court. Stand in one, claim it, and it is yours forever.

It’s a simple idea (like all the best ideas are): a developer named Geojouyt launched the game on TikTok. The premise is simple – turn on your location and go for a walk, every time you enter a new hex, you can claim it as your own. Every 25 claims, you have to take a photo of the view from the hex you have just claimed.

But it is that that makes this game so interesting – by making the claimants photograph their hexes, the game has re-instigated random Street Photography.

A lost art form in the 21st century. With a phone in our hands all the time and Google Maps and Street View, the need to photograph everyday views has practically been lost. Most people take a 1,0000 selfies in front of famous landmarks but don’t take a shot of the building, the street, or a park. The small requirement of the game has created a Photo Album of random images of buses, street corners, trees, or even the dog!

If you are moving from point A to point B and claiming your hexes as you go, you lift your phone and *Snap*. No real composition, no deep thought (most of the time), just a quick shot of an Ice Cream Van or a Corner Shop and on you go, claiming your next yellow hex. But that simple act has brought back Street View Photography.

The game is web-based and requires a setting to track your location so GPS can pinpoint you in your 20m Hex, (you can set the site to only show you an hour or a day later, so they can’t find you in person). One of the 1.66 trillion that cover the entire Earth’s surface, so far (as of 3 days ago, 7/9/26), 1,000,000 Hexes were claimed. On the TikTok account, there are tons of statistics- things like there are as many people playing the game in the UK as there are Hexes claimed in all of the USA. The popularity of the game is clearly home-based, the developer is from the UK, so UK TikTokers have jumped onto the game in the thousands, but there are plenty of international players too. Search the whole map and see little tiny dots as far away as South Africa and New Zealand, the most remote is on the Island of Tahiti.

As with most games, there is a Leaderboard on the website showing who has claimed the most. The TikTok has a bit more information, like which country has the most claims, which city, what supermarket chain has had the most hexes claimed within their stores (If you wanted to know, it is Asda)

You can even invite your friends and anyone you know to join a Squad so you can take over the world together!

A new update is to follow people so you can keep track of who is doing what, what pictures, etc (which to her sounds terrifying! but to him sounds great). Other people can also check in on your hex and if you haven’t already taken a photo, they can take a picture on your claim until you overwrite it.

There are also challenges, such as check-ins, longest distance, doughnuts, all sorts of silly things.

The game is free to play, but there are Pro Subscriptions £2.99pm where you can have different colors, restore a day, extra stats, etc.

Go claim your hex, Bloomsbury seems very empty! Maybe inside the British Museum? Or on top of the Alps?
