The other day we were talking about our favorite movies and though we know that the more personal side of things may not be a a review per say but it does give you an indication of what our personal likes and dislikes are. Since from time to time we count down what TV shows we have watched, what Albums we have listened to and what Movies we would recommend. I thought we would share our Top twenty five Movies of all time.
Like most things Bob and Ash have very different likes and dislikes, this carries over to the movie/film sides of things. So we broke this up into two sections Ash’s and Bob’s, much like our Top Women and Men lists. We have already seen Ash’s so here is Bob’s.

25. Love Simon – I know this has come out this year but the moment we were watching it, I knew it was going to be an instant favorite. Love, Simon is a movie based on the Book Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda. It’s a coming of age/coming out storyline in the Romcom Genre. It really does appeal to everyone! Unless your a close minded idiot! When we went to see this in the cinema I was giggling, tearing up, smiling and so happy with the way it was translated from book to movie. 24. Amélie – is a quirky French comedy centering around a young waitress who decides to help the people around her and in doing so lives in a world of her own making. Yes its french so there will be subtitles for the english speaking people but it is well worth a watch if you haven’t already. I remember watching this when I was about 15 and really enjoying the quirkiness. It blended reality and fantasy in such a fun way. 23. Dazed and Confused – is one of the movies that Ash recommended to me when we were first friends and surprisingly I really enjoyed it! It centers around a group of mismatched students who meet up one night for a party. It’s the usual coming of age story but with stoners. I have probably watched this once every two years since being introduced to it. 22. Mr Nobody – is one of the select few Sci-fi movies that I really enjoyed. Set in 2092, the storyline follows the last living human in a world full of genetically altered humans. This shows his life as it was, as it could be and more. It does jump about a bit and is very psychologically speculative, with alternative realities that could have formed. I am not usual a Sci-Fi fan but this gripped me from the start!
21. The Rules of Attraction – though starring that actor I can’t stand (Van de beek?) and a few a really really like (Somerhalder, Sossamon and Biel) I really enjoy it every time I watch it. This is one of those chapter movies, with multiple storylines intermingling. We follow three main characters with each narrating their own inner thoughts, throughout. It’s a very dark comedy and at times can be very gritty but there is a love triangle storyline there weaved in. 20. Virtual Sexuality – This Movie was unexpected and so so good! Though it didn’t make its way into my top 10 it is one of those that If you know me I will make you watch it. The story centers around a girl who is somewhat shy and not that confident. She ends up making her perfect man at a Virtual Reality convention but an accident happens and the man she makes comes to life. Its funny, romantic and probably the one of the best (if not the best) English film I have ever seen.
19. The Craft – is one of those cult classics. Again if you know me I will have made you watch it. The movie follows a girl who after transferring school finds herself befriending a group of girls and ultimately ends up becoming a coven of witches. They each have their own unique storylines and its pretty much all centered around females (Always a plus) Magic, Female empowerment, Friendship and creepiness what’s not to like?
18. The Lost Boys – again a cult classic. Two brothers move in with their mother in a small town. The eldest ends up falling for a local woman who is mixed up with a group of Vampires. You can guess that it’s not going to be the straight forward love storyline. Im sure it is probably dated and there is a remake coming out this year but before you watch that, try this one. The makeup is cool and it’s still thoroughly enjoyable. 17. Crazy – Another one of my French movies. Probably my first LGBTQ movie that I ever watched. A teenager who is confused about his sexuality, is in conflict with his religious parents and upbringing. After forcing himself to try and live up to their expectations, how do they feel when he finally is just himself. This is another coming out story but it certainly stuck with me for a really long time. The music is good, the makeup is cool and the culture references are what really make this movie stick.
16. Blow – A biographical movie about a drug dealer in the 1970’s. Though typically biographies are somewhat dull this has a real up and down vibe, you end up wanting to know what’s going to happen next. Interesting throughout and thoroughly enjoyable. Again this must be good based on the fact I really dislike (Penelope Cruz)
15. The Crow – I love this movie! From the moment I watched it I loved it! Its gothic, its vengeance and it’s all about justice! This storyline is about a young man and his wife who was brutally murdered by a gang. On the anniversary of their deaths he has been resurrected to get revenge against the very people who killed him. A black crow leads him to his victims. Seriously if you haven’t watched it go! Now!
14. Thirteen – I lost count of the amount of times I have watched this movie. Again this is a coming of age story but in a darker gritty way. The perfect student Tracy has everything she could ever want but she craves something more. After befriending the schools queen bee Evie the real story begins. Together they explore drugs, drink, sexuality, piercings and even self harm. Sure this is a triggering film and at times can be very dark but it is really good!
13. Life as a House – I have probably watched this once a year (or more) since I first heard about it. The storyline is simple, we follow a man who decides to tear down his house and rebuild it from the ground up, with the help of his rebellious teenager, a teenager who lives next door and his ex wife. There are ups and downs, it’s often humorous and enlightening and ultimately a satisfying movie all around. 12. Inception – Again one of the small selection of Sci-fi that I actually like. A brilliant cast, a gripping storyline, brilliant CGI and a story that ultimately leaves you with more questions than you began with. The movie is about a thief who has the rare ability to enter people’s dreams, he builds a team each with their own unique talents to help him along the way. Then the heist is underway, we enter dream after dream after dream until we reach the conclusion but ultimately it’s all a question of what or who is actually in control. 11. Jawbreakers – I watched this when I was a teenager and still really like this movie! It’s about a group of mean girls who accidentally kill their best friend with jawbreaker (candy) and what happens there after. There’s a makeover scene, a murder, bitchiness, a cover up and it’s so so twisted! A very dark comedy but worth a watch. It was band in a number of countries so there is that.
10. Fight Club – ‘The first rule of fight club is you don’t talk about fight club.’ That said let’s talk about it. Centering around an insomniac and a soap maker, together they start an underground fighting club. Where slowly they recruit more and more randoms until everything gets out of hand. Over all this is another black comedy that has a slightly more macabre storyline that most.
9. Practical Magic – Another witchy movie. This time following a pair of sisters who had vowed to stay away from the witch craft that they had been raised with. That is until an accident happens forcing them back to the life they were always meant for. Overall it’s a really romantic movie with sisterhood, magic and a murder. It really is one of my favorites.
8. Batman the Dark Knight – Ok this may be partially down to the fact I love Heath Ledger and everything that he did. So him being the Joker (Swoony eyes) I have never really liked Batman as a character so whenever there is something batman related I will always end up completely falling in love with the enemies. This however was gripping from the first scene, obviously routing for the bad guy has its drawbacks but I really do love this movie. Besides I really want to learn that pencil trick!
7. Blinder – Well first I forced Ash to watch this. Then it turned into a once a year movie. It may not be the best movie in this whole list but the sheer amount I have watched it is what has solidified its place in the top 10. The whole plot follows an ex aussie football player who has to return to the town where a scandal had ruined his life. We explore what happened and what is currently happening because of it. This is one of the only movies that contains sport that I actually find interesting!
6. Final Fantasy VII Advent Children – I was always a big fan of Final Fantasy games and loved playing for ages. So naturally I watched the movies but this one really stood apart from the rest. The animation is beautiful and everyone is so ridiculously pretty. Plus it has Vincent Valentine which is always a plus. The movie picks up two years after Final Fantasy VII, where a trio of bad guys have been kidnapping sick children. The hero Cloud has also been infected with the same disease but sets out to rescue the children. In doing so has to face the team he has been distancing himself from and fight his demons.
5. The Fall – Visually this movie is beyond stunning! The cinematography is beautiful! The storyline follows an Injured bedridden stuntman who begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastic story of five mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality blurs as the tale advances. I can praise this movie for literally everything. The storyline really does plunge you into the realm of fantasy the acting is perfection! I think this is the first movie that I ever noticed locations, color, the way it was filmed as well as being sucked into the story.
4. Moulin Rouge – This movie was actually bought for me one Christmas as a joke (The people who bought it for me didn’t actually know me very well) I watched it once and really, really liked it! The colors! The music! The singing! The whole production! It is my favorite musical of all time! The story follows a young poet who is plunged into a world of passion, drink and opulence. He ends up falling for the star of Moulin Rouge, a beautiful courtesan. You can guess this again is not going to be your typical love story. Though at times it can be super romantic it is also exceptionally sad but so so worth it!
3. Howl’s Moving Castle – I was introduced to this movie by one of my anime obsessed friends. It was my first proper anime and I fell in love instantly. You have to watch the original for the proper voices as the dubbed version plays down the characters and makes them a little less striking. The story follows a young woman (Sophie) Who’s life is uneventful until she meets a wizard (Howl) who lives in a magical castle. An evil witch curses Sophie which leads Howl to search for the cure. It’s a beautifully drawn so much so I am still preparing to get Howl and Calcifer as a tattoo. There are so many quirky characters weaved into the story! Simply its perfect! My favorite anime of all time.
2. 10 Things I hate about you – This movie changed my life. That sounds corny but when I first saw it, I was being bullied so badly at school that this was just the thing I needed to see. I fell in love with both of lead actors because of it. A modernization of Shakespeare’s – Taming of the Shrew, The story centers around Kat, A beautiful, smart but independent woman and her younger sister Bianca, who is desperate for a boyfriend. However the house rules are both sisters have to date or not at all, so a scheme is set in motion to set Kat up with the schools freak, Patrick. It is possibly one of the most romantic movies that I have seen. It also taught me that you should never be ashamed of being yourself. It also sparked my love of feminist literature and my ability to not give a shit what anyone things about me. I have probably seen this movie more than 100 times and can say the entire script without it being on.
1. The Nightmare Before Christmas – My Disney Movie! So romantic! The whole thing is just my kind of thing. I love the animation, This is Tim Burton at his best. When I was younger I fell a little in love with Jack enough that I wanted to get him tattooed on me, however instead of just him I ended up getting of all the important characters. The story follows Jack Skellington who has got bored of doing the same thing every Halloween (In Halloween Town) in search of something new he stumbles upon a new town (Christmas Town) His life has regained purpose, in the hopes of sharing the magic that is Christmas he sets about trying to change what has always been. The illustrations are gothic and I have been told can be creepy? It really is unique as far as a kids movie in my opinion.
